Q&A

What is the purpose of this project?
Several anti-gay organizations are distorting the work of legitimate scientists to further discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. We are asking researchers who have had their work misused to report infractions. Our goal is to respond to academic abuses and stop disinformation campaigns from harming the GLBT community. This project also aims to assist the media in holding anti-gay activists accountable when they co-opt science for political gain.

Remaining silent in the face of the “Big Lie” allows fallacies to flower and falsehoods to flourish. We must not allow science to be corrupted by those whose goal is the promotion of prejudice.

Why should researchers join our efforts?
When the results of studies are deliberately twisted, it hurts science. It devalues the profession and causes the public to lose trust in legitimate research. By speaking out, you are standing up for scientific honesty and integrity. You are also not allowing anti-gay activists to use your research for the purpose of harming people and denying them equality under the law.

As a researcher, you have put many hours, in some cases years of work, into your conclusions. To have them intentionally misused may put a stain on the reputation you have worked so hard to gain. This is your chance to set the record straight.

Is this an attempt to limit free speech?
While we respect the right to free speech, we reject the idea that false speech should not be vigorously challenged. Speech is only meaningful if we can distinguish between fact and fiction.

How long will this campaign last?
This campaign will continue until it is no longer considered “business as usual” for anti-gay political organizations to misrepresent science.

Is this campaign a joint effort by gay activists and liberal college professors?
In most cases, Truth Wins Out has no prior contact with the researcher who has claimed his or her research has been distorted.

If the anti-gay activists cited for ethical infractions thought these professors and researchers were too liberal, they should not have quoted them in the first place. If these organizations disagree with the conclusions drawn by these scientists, they can refrain from quoting their work in the future.

Why do we care?
Until GLBT youth are no longer committing suicide, hate crimes are no longer occurring and discrimination is a relic of the past, we have an obligation to counter the “Big Lie” and create a better world for the next generation.

What is Truth Wins Out?
Truth Wins Out is a non-profit organization that defends the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, exposes the “ex-gay” industry and provides accurate information about the lives of GLBT people.
